Design

The S22 Ultra stands out from the competition in this yet another area in a very “Note” manner with an altogether new external look.

Samsung has a new aesthetic for 2022 that is somewhat “flatter” and more “minimalistic” than it was for the previous year. However, to be honest, neither qualification perfectly suits the S22.

Despite being somewhat flatter than its S21 predecessor, the S22 nevertheless has some rounded and curving features.

The majority of the S22’s earlier design leaks and renderings gave the central frame an almost totally flat appearance, similar to the style of Apple’s most recent iPhone.

But that is not the case. Even in person, the frame does appear deceivingly flat when viewed from the appropriate angle.

Along its middle line, it slopes softly and symmetrically. In comparison to the S21 and its sharply curved backside, the S22’s overall form is unquestionably “flatter.”

The new form is nice, but it’s not exactly easy to handle. The S22 Ultra is actually extremely slick.

Additionally, Samsung’s unique coating for the metal frame is a grease magnet.

When it comes to dirt, the S22 Ultra rear performs far better. In actuality, there is no discernible oil buildup except the occasional bit of dust that is taken off the large flat surface.

Speaking about the flat rear panel represents the S22 and S22most +’s significant design modification. In sharp contrast to the S21 Galaxy smartphones’ deep curves, it is nearly totally flat. Like the front, it is built of Gorilla Glass Victus+.

The remaining four hues are Graphite, Cream, Sky Blue, and Violet, which are only available on Samsung.com and at the Samsung Experience shop.

These feature various frames and colour accents: Violet has soft gold accents, Graphite has black accents, and Cream and Sky Blue have silver.

Although we haven’t actually seen the latter in person, we think the secondary colour was taken from the Pink Gold, the device we are reviewing.

Particularly gentle and subtle are the hues. If you don’t like it, Samsung undoubtedly offers more daring options.

Turning around, we see another largely flat Gorilla Glass Victus+ surface on the front of the Galaxy S22.

Although the S21 also features a flat display, it may be argued that the S22 is even flatter from this angle.

The top glass of the S21 has a characteristic curve that continues into the side frame and is commonly referred to as a 2.5D glass edge. This indicates that the entire screen assembly, including the glass, protrudes above the frame.

The glass face of the S22 Ultra design, in comparison, is significantly lower and buried into the aluminium side frame, making it even flatter.

The two meet at a right angle and lie flush, thereby making the entire surface appear to be much “flatter.”

While the S22 is not “bezel-less,” we don’t think that’s necessarily a negative thing.

In terms of safety and structural integrity, having a few additional millimetres of buffer between your device’s real edge and its display panel is a good thing.

It’s also fantastic to get a good glass screen protector to adhere to the front of a smartphone without the need for gimmicky liquid glue.

Additionally, it appears that the entire trend of “endless presentations” has faded away.

The bezels are still rather thin and strikingly symmetrical on both sides, though. We understand that.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is quite durable. It hardly moves at all, mostly because of its metal inner structure. For the S22 generation, the frame’s size has increased, which possibly aids in better maintaining the double “glass sandwich” design.

The specific aluminium alloy blend used by Samsung is known as the “Armor Aluminum” frame.

If this term sounds familiar, it’s because Samsung employed this specific aluminium on its most recent foldable, the Z Fold3 5G and Z Flip3 5G, while also claiming that the durability of those devices was improved by 10%.

The S22 is pretty slippery and difficult to grasp without a case, but in a positive and encouraging sense, the phone itself feels quite “solid.” It also strikes a good balance.

With the centre of weight almost exactly in the middle, the weight distribution is ideal. On a little phone like the S22, this isn’t as crucial.

The body on the S22 bears the normal IP68 ingress protection grade we have come to expect from Samsung flagships.

With the Galaxy S22 series, Samsung has increased its environmental efforts in a number of ways. The “Repurpose Ocean-Bound Plastics” effort is the first, and it entails rescuing and recycling used fishing nets from the ocean Samsung.

According to the company’s one published drawing, the power button and volume rockers for the whole Galaxy S22 series were made from the net recovered material. Actually, the plastic key brackets are for the buttons, not the full pieces.

Additionally, the S22 Ultra’s inner S Pen cover is constructed in the same manner.

On the right side, there is a power button and a volume rocker, both of which are conveniently located, clicky, and responsive.

Except for a few antenna lines, the frame on the opposite left side is empty. It might be important to note that the S22’s antenna lines are not symmetrical from side to side. It doesn’t really matter in real life.

For the most part, the same is true of the top side, which has just one tiny hole for the secondary microphone and an additional antenna line.

The S22’s bottom is considerably busier. The Type-C connector supports USB Host and Type-C Alt mode for video output. 25W is the maximum charging power, and PPS is toned using PD.

The twin nanoSIM card tray and the main microphone are both on the bottom side. Unfortunately, the Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra versions do not support expandable storage.

The S22 also has a bottom-firing speaker on this side. With the earpiece, it forms a hybrid stereo system.

Speaking of the earpiece, it is cleverly concealed and virtually undetectable, with just a tiny slit that is hardly perceptible above the front-facing display. It nevertheless has a booming voice despite its little stature.

We’ve become accustomed to expecting little selfie camera punch holes from Samsung flagships. Even though it appears to be vacant at the top of the display, there are at least a few discreet sensors there.

Specifically, a light sensor and a proximity sensor, both STM STK33915. Even when putting light directly on the region, these are undetectable, but that is hardly surprising given that Samsung has practically mastered under-display sensors.

The Galaxy S22 sports an under-display ultrasonic fingerprint reader, much like its brothers.

Samsung has remained committed to the technology and worked to advance it, opting to rely on its benefits and put up with some of its drawbacks.

To be honest, since their inception, these ultrasonic sensors have undergone significant changes.

From generation to generation, they have expanded in size and generally improved upon their performance.

However, we sincerely cannot state that they are quite as quick or dependable as contemporary optical systems. The S22 is approximately the pinnacle of ultrasonic technology.

It was pretty quick and extremely accurate, in our opinion. But only further testing will reveal whether this habit endures.

Display

Unquestionably, Samsung is the market leader for smartphone displays. The Korean company is far from complacent in its position as the market leader despite having the best OLED panels available.

Quite the opposite. Samsung Display is continuously coming up with new ideas, and the Galaxy S22 gets to take use of the best solutions available. But in varied degrees.

Unfortunately, Samsung has had to explain a few things already due to its difficulty in accurately communicating the slight display performance differences throughout the Galaxy S22 range.

In terms of the S22 trio’s distinctions, the S22+ and S22 Ultra have a greater maximum brightness than the standard S22.

Additionally, the S22+ and S22 receive LTPS technology, while the S22 Ultra receives LTPO 2.0 technology for its dynamic refresh rate. But there are some details to go over.

On all Galaxy S22 phones, the brightness has significantly improved. The S22+ and S22 Ultra, however, are anticipated to achieve higher maximum brightness levels than the standard S22.

You may have already heard the absurd 1,750 nits peak brightness value touted for those two, which we tested and confirmed.

That is noticeably brighter than the Galaxy S21 it replaces and about as bright as the iPhone 13 Pro gets.

The S22 Ultra and S22+ are believed to use Samsung’s new M12 OLED technology, which has an approximately 16% higher light efficiency.

Although there isn’t much official information on Samsung’s OLED panel technology, and sources seem to offer conflicting information, the numbers we measured are in good agreement with this theory.

While this is going on, it appears that the standard Galaxy S22 is still utilising M11 OLED substrates, which, according to dispersed resources, are also present in the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max.

Again, the results of our actual tests seem to support this hypothesis well.

There are a few other noteworthy elements of display brightness. especially the way it is managed.

Samsung has incorporated a unique display option dubbed “Extra brightness” with the S22 range.

Connectivity

The Galaxy S22 Ultra doesn’t skimp on connection despite its small size (in comparison to the typical phone of today). Except for the capability for Ultra Wide Band (UWB). The S22+ and S22 Ultra both feature it, but not the S22.

Depending on how you consider the mmWave one, the Galaxy S22 has at least two primary variations. Because it is only available in the USA, it is based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen. 1 chipset.

Almost all nations outside of Europe will also receive the Snapdragon this year, whereas European devices, like the one we reviewed, will have Samsung’s Exynos 2200 processor.

Although there are unquestionable variations between the two chips, they both achieve astonishing parity in terms of connection.

All S22 devices, with a few minor band variations here and there, offer multi-SIM and dual Standby SA/NSA/Sub6 5G.

Additionally, integrated eSIM support is available, however three-way simultaneous standby is not possible.

There are certain markets where the S22 is available in a single-SIM configuration, however, this is not the standard. Another option is mmWave, which even weighs a little bit more.

The Snapdragon and Exynos are remarkably comparable to one another in terms of local connectivity.

Both devices have NFC, Bluetooth 5.2 with LE compatibility, and dual-band Wi-Fi 6e. Additionally, the duo practically shares GPS capabilities.

Both devices support A-GPS, GLONASS, BDS, and Galileo and feature dual-band (L1+L5) GPS receivers.

A complete set of sensors, including an accelerometer, gyro, proximity sensor, compass, and barometer, are also included with the S22.

There is also NFC. You could notice the absence of ANT support and Samsung’s MST if you are upgrading from a previous Samsung flagship. But neither omission is brand-new.

Both a notification LED and a 3.5mm audio jack are absent. Not very surprising.

I briefly return to the Type-C port on the S22. A USB 3.2 data connection is supported, according to the advertising.

While that does appear amazing on paper, nearly any USB port can be given the designation 3.2 owing to the terrible state in which the USB naming system is currently.

With known fast USB cables, an external Thunderbolt drive, a PC with a Thunderbolt 3 port, and some testing, we were never even close to reaching the 5Gbps anticipated transfer rate of the 1×1 USB 3.2 spec.

Take what you will from that. On a more positive side, the Type-C interface supports audio and video output. Even better, DeX is the industry pioneer in desktop environments.

Samsung S22 Ultra Speakers & Battery life

It differs from the maximum brightness that can be achieved in direct sunlight and only functions when auto-brightness is disabled. The purpose of this is to enable more “manual brightness” on the slider.

Using it, we discovered that the Galaxy S22’s maximum brightness was 757 nits, despite the fact that the same device’s maximum brightness on the slider with Extra Brightness off was only 465 nits.

However, increasing brightness alone won’t solve the problem of making the display easier to read in direct sunlight.

Additionally, Samsung strives to produce the best possible image in terms of colour and contrast. The S22 series introduces Vision Booster as a solution for this.

To produce the best image possible, it performs per-pixel tone mapping using information from the phone’s light sensor to identify the characteristics of the ambient light in the area.

The aforementioned image will by definition be severely distorted in terms of colour and contrast, but the objective is to minimize the effects of ambient light.

It is challenging to quantify the effectiveness of Vision Booster. However, under bright sunlight, we noted that the Galaxy S22 had a little superior image over the Galaxy S21.

Although it’s impossible to quantify the placebo effect of really knowing about Vision Booster, the difference is not substantial. Consider it a nice-to-have rather than a ground-breaking feature.

The Galaxy S22 does not disappoint as predicted when it comes to colours. There are simply two colour options, Vivid and Natural, in classic Samsung design.

The earliest attempts to use the DCI-P3 colour space come quite close to being colour-accurate. However, the default colour scheme is a little too cool.

When warming up the colours manually, one change on the slider causes a variation that is within what we would consider DCI-P3 colour accuracy.

Then there is the natural mode, which essentially achieves sRGB’s goals. When compared to sRGB, the S22 is highly colour correct.

Even if our study is accurate and the stock Galaxy S22 has somewhat less advanced OLED screen technology than its brothers, it is obvious that little has been sacrificed in terms of brightness, contrast, or colours.

HDR support is no different. The S22 reports software compatibility for HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG.

Dolby Vision is the only standard that is lacking. Of course, it also boasts Google’s highest Widevine L1 DRM certification, enabling high-definition video streaming from providers like Netflix.

Netflix was happy to provide us with the highest 1080p resolution necessary to fully saturate the S22’s native 1080p+ resolution in stunning HDR.

The Galaxy S22 gives an HDR experience unlike few other devices, not just mobile phones, despite having a relatively tiny diagonal.

Battery power

One of Samsung’s more contentious choices for this generation was to reduce the battery capacity of the Galaxy S22+ and S22 by 300mAh apiece compared to the previous year.

The S22 now only contains 3,700 mAh as opposed to the 4,000 mAh in the S21 5G. Samsung hoped to close the gap with its more effective 4nm chipsets, software, and particularly adjustable refresh rate techniques.

That’s not precisely the situation, regrettably. The vanilla S22, like its larger sister, performs mediocrely in terms of battery life, achieving 85 hours on our benchmark test.

Fair enough, that’s still a respectable performance from the S22, especially considering its battery and overall size, but by no means remarkable.

The in-call endurance is adequate, as are all of the figures displayed on the screen. The Exynos 2200’s 3G standby, which is a little insufficient, was the Exynos’ weakest link, in our opinion.

But since it’s a new chipset, software engineers might be able to enhance standby performance. We at least have hope.

However, the S22 now achieves fewer hours on a single charge than its S21 forerunner.

Some generational technological advancements are still discernible, as seen by the better web browser score than on the S21. Specifically, we are referring to the Exynos 2200 and Exynos 2100 models.

In terms of upcoming software upgrades and enhancements, we did notice some odd behaviour with the dynamic refresh rate on the S22 and the remainder of the S22 series, which we believe is resolved.

Although our video playback test utilizing the automated refresh rate runs the display at 24Hz as it should, it nevertheless manages to use more power than playing the same movie at 60Hz.

The findings are inconsistent, and it may be a problem with our SmartViser testing software or a systemic problem. There is always room for development.

Charging velocity

Samsung has remained true to its principles and has not truly joined the industry trend of steadily increasing battery charging speeds. Do not misunderstand; we value convenience.

Still, current battery technology hasn’t kept up with our desire for rapid charging, and in the end, pumping power into a cell at an increasingly faster rate still causes it to eventually degrade and eventually stop functioning, at worst and most frequently along with the rest of a perfectly functional phone.

Even if not by you, by someone else, recycling at least some of these increasingly complicated and challenging to-recycle devices is the best you can hope for.

But that’s a subject best left for a completely more serious discussion. In conclusion, we do not hold the Galaxy S22’s 25W charging support against it.

By the way, this rate is comparable to that of the most recent Apple iPhones, proving that Samsung is not alone in its battery charging philosophy.

Having said that, the Galaxy S22 charges in perfect accordance with previous Samsung expectations; you may anticipate charging the phone from completely dead to just over 60% in 30 minutes, and a full charge takes slightly longer.

That is essentially true for the majority of contemporary Galaxy phones, as shown in the chart, with the exception of those from the Z Fold and Z Flip series, which feature two distinct battery packs that must be charged internally.

Although Samsung does not include it in the packaging, some retailers and carriers are actually bundling the official Samsung 25W charger (EP-TA800) with the Galaxy S22 during our testing.

This particular charger is an older design. However, given that we’ve already tested the S22+ and S22 Ultra, as well as the older and newer Samsung 45W models, we can generally say that the Galaxy S22 trio charges in a little over an hour from 0%. That is straightforward and constant.

Speakers

The second channel on the Galaxy S22’s hybrid audio system is the amplified earpiece.

It’s a typical approach to taking action. In our testing, it received a “Good” loudness rating, just missing the threshold for the Very Good designation.

Practically speaking, it is nearly identical to the Galaxy S21 from the previous year and roughly as loud as the Galaxy S22+. Consistency is always appreciated.

Although Samsung did a good job of balancing the two speakers, there is only so much that can be done given their significant size differences both externally, where the earpiece barely has an echo chamber, and inside, where the size of their output “holes,” for want of a better description.

The majority of the sound is produced by the bottom speaker, which has a larger sound stage and greater frequency response. However, even without discussing any of the two explicitly, the configuration sounds extremely fantastic in use.

Regarding real sound quality, the vanilla S22 is tuned identically to its S22+ sister.

It has a beautiful and broad sound stage and a little tighter response curve than last generation’s S21 flagships. In our opinion, the S22 sounds a little bit nicer than the S21.

However, the Apple iPhone 13 Pro has both of them by a wide margin in this regard.

The S22 includes Dolby Atmos with general multimedia profiles and a version designed specifically for gaming as additional options. Though both do reduce the phone’s maximum volume.

You can adjust the sound to your preference or hearing needs by using the equalizer, UHQ upscaler, and Adapt sound, which are all included.

A particularly clever innovation is the ability to play the sound from just one app on a different audio device, such as a Bluetooth speaker or headset, freeing up the phone to play other sounds.
