The Samsung Galaxy S21 is a slight improvement on the Galaxy S20 with its 6.2-inch display, three rear cameras, and identical 4,000 mAh battery. It also has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 as well as a new camera module and colour palettes.

While the Galaxy S21 is primarily an incremental update; on the other hand the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, which has since been replaced by the Galaxy S22 Ultra, came with major modifications.

The Galaxy S21 has two models which are 128GB and 256GB storage devices. The Samsung Galaxy S21 packaging only contains a USB-C cable; if you don’t already own a charger, you’ll need to purchase one.

Samsung S21 Design

The Galaxy S21 shares a lot of similarities with the Galaxy S20 from the front, including a 6.2-inch display with a stylish punch-hole selfie camera at the upper centre of the screen.

The S21 has chosen flat display edges over the curved ones of its predecessor. The smooth edges flow into the new “Contour Cut” camera design, in which the rear camera module seems to merge into the left edge and the back of the device.

Also, the Samsung Galaxy S21’s plastic back replaces the metal, which is perhaps the largest difference. Samsung refers to it as polycarbonate, but in reality, it’s just fancy plastic, while the S20 uses glass.

In addition to having a somewhat nicer feel than the polycarbonate on the back of the S20 FE, it has a more tactile touch than the Galaxy S series’ glass back, making it feel less prone to slip out of your hand or attract fingerprints.

The Galaxy S21 also has a pseudo-retro sci-fi appearance, similar to Star Trek and Art Deco, thanks to the slight copper tone of the camera bump and borders and the violet panel’s nice soft tint.

The Galaxy S21 weighs 6.07 ounces which is the perfect weight and size for one-handed use; tiny enough for your thumb to reach two-thirds of the display and huge enough for you to comfortably hold, sit down and watch hours of films on.

The in-display ultrasonic fingerprint reader on the Galaxy S21 is also more responsive as a result of Qualcomm’s new scanner, which is 1.7 times bigger and 50% quicker than the last model.

The Galaxy S21 doesn’t come with the microSD card slot that its predecessors had, which might not be ideal for some people.

Samsung S21 Display

The 6.2-inch AMOLED display of the Galaxy S21 has seen both a downgrade and an improvement from the S20s.

The Galaxy S21’s maximum resolution is 1080p, so you no longer have to decide between a full HD+ resolution running at 120Hz and a QHD resolution running at 60Hz, as you did with the Galaxy S20.

That may be more constrictive, but it also eliminates complications. If you want to preserve as much battery life you can go ahead and configure the display to stay at 60Hz.

The Galaxy S21 display performs with a Delta-E of 0.29 and 109.2% sRGB and 77.4% DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage when tested in its “natural” screen mode.

Although the iPhone 12 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra outperformed the S21 in terms of coverage and colour accuracy, those are nonetheless respectable results.

When you put the S21 in “Vivid” mode, you get a ton of contrast and colour.

In a nutshell, the S21 display is fantastic for gaming, viewing films and movies, and perusing Instagram photos. The S21 continues Samsung’s tradition of having top-notch screens on its Galaxy S smartphones.

Samsung S21 Cameras

samsung s21 camera

The cameras on the Galaxy S21 are identical to those on the Galaxy S20 in terms of hardware.

This smartphone camera stack is a primary 12MP wide-angle lens, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 64MP telephoto lens with 3x hybrid optic zoom and 30x space zoom make up the triple camera array.

To boost the trio of rear cameras, Samsung is relying heavily on software and computational photography advancements. And the Galaxy S21 is a great example of this.

While the Galaxy S21’s camera shot is bursting with colour and detail, the colours can be a little bit more saturated when compared with smartphones in its category from other brands.

Also, the primary camera on the S21 performs admirably outside in natural light, however, the portrait option is further hampered by poor lighting.

It is important to note that when shooting things instead of people, the Galaxy S21 produces a beautiful portrait image and it also sharpen its nighttime images quite a bit. All three of the cameras of the Galaxy S21 support night mode.

The S21’s significant camera improvements are seen in the telephoto camera’s “Space Zoom” feature while the Zoom Lock function stabilizes the photo and utilizes AI to locate the subject.

Even if your hands are a little unsteady, this works fairly well and allows you to capture images that are remarkably crisp for such great zooms.

The Galaxy S21 offers a wide range of options in terms of video, as it can record films at up to 8K resolution at 24 frames per second.

Other high-end capabilities include super-smooth 1080p video recording at 120 frames per second.

Also the new Director’s View, while you’re recording video, is another plus. The front and back cameras may both be used simultaneously for shooting, and you can also see live thumbnails from each camera.

This makes switching to the ideal shot for your film easy. It functions fairly well and is less of a gimmick than I initially believed.

The portrait video, which is just a live focus video with a different name, is also rather stylish and produces a film with the subjects sharp and the background blurred.

Improved Single Take, a feature that takes several stills and images with a single swipe, is one of the camera updates. Single Take now offers dynamic slow-motion and highlight videos.

Samsung S21 Performance

The Galaxy S21 is equipped with the most recent Snapdragon 888 technology in the United States, which claims 20% higher CPU performance, 35% greater GPU speed, and improved AI performance.

The S21 accomplishes fine with its 8GB of RAM despite the lack of a 12GB option, and during my testing, I had no delay.

Unsurprisingly, though, the S21 outperforms a lot of other Android phones with the Snapdragon 865.

The S21’s graphics performance peaked at 33 frames per second in the 3DMark Wild Life test.

The S21’s back has a touch warm, it doesn’t lag or lack responsiveness even with those games open and a ton of other programs running simultaneously.

Samsung S21 Battery Life

The Galaxy S21 comes with a 4000 mAh battery, the same as its predecessor.

It’s unfortunate that Samsung didn’t increase the capacity a little bit, but that’s acceptable for a phone of its size.

Still, longer battery life should be achieved because of the adaptive refresh rate and greater chip efficiency.

With a 9-hour, 31-minute battery life, it almost beats the Galaxy S20’s, thus the new silicon appears to be working.

The Galaxy S21 lasted 6 hours and 31 minutes when used in its default “Adaptive” mode, which dynamically modifies the refresh rate of the display.

Even if you only get a bright display with a 120Hz refresh rate, it is still far from terrible.

Additionally, the S21’s AI capabilities should improve battery efficiency over time as they learn more about how I use my phone, but that won’t happen overnight.

The messiest part of things happens when charging. In our tests, quick charging via the USB-C PD standard charged the battery to 55% in 30 minutes.

The issue is that while Samsung only includes a USB-C cable in the package, you must have a charging brick on hand.

The additional cost and little annoyance it could give some S21 purchasers who aren’t flush with phone chargers are worth it to reduce technological waste.

Samsung S21 UI and Software

Samsung S21

The Samsung Galaxy S21 UI (user interface) comes with a revamped Quick Panel and a notification area that appears less crowded, making the UI more attractive.

On this smartphone, widgets on the lock screen can be placed on the screen and their transparency can be changed as well.

However, the One UI 3 on the S21 will frequently try to coerce you into using Samsung Pass and your Samsung account. Good luck with that if you can remember your Samsung password.

You can also use the Samsung S21 as a clone of the Chrome OS by attaching it to an external display.

The best update policy you can get on an Android phone from Samsung is four years of platform upgrades and five years of security fixes, even surpassing Google’s Pixels.
