iPhone 14 Pro Max Design & Display

iphone 14 pro max design

The design of the iPhone 14 Pro Max isn’t much different from that of the 13 Pro Max. The camera hump at the rear is noticeably taller despite the almost same size, so you’re out of luck if you’re looking for anything to match the expensive case you bought for the 13 Pro Max.

When handling the new model, if you’ve used the Pro Max 12 or 13, it will feel quite natural. Your fingers will naturally rest on the screen’s squarer, more pointed edges, therefore the majority of people’s thumbs will need to do the usual hand gymnastics in order to reach across it.

Contrary to what you would have expected, the bottom of the gadget does not include a USB-C connector, and the physical mute button is still there.

Apple will continue to support Lightning for at least another year, which will be a relief to everyone who was wondering if they would need to upgrade their chargers.

The stainless steel ring around the outside is still a fingerprint magnet, as you can see in our hands-on photos. Also note the absence of the SIM tray, which is located on the side beneath the volume buttons. If individuals had the option to upgrade their phones SIM-free, it would be interesting to watch how they would respond. However, when the option was initially offered, there were rumblings of unhappiness.

The most major design change has, however, been made to the screen; let’s take a closer look.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max display has undergone one notable change: the notch has been replaced with a single, protracted pill. Or is the only medication one large pill?

That’s not the case; instead, Apple’s iOS 16 fills in the blanks for you and, in a clever touch, uses the space between the screens to show little notification lights.

It goes by the moniker Dynamic Island, which was first welcomed with amusement but will undoubtedly quickly spread among Apple users.

This is fantastic because it adapts to your actions and moves accordingly. You could start playing music and have the album cover in the top when we experimented with it, have the timer sit next to the notch, or just touch it to access your music.

It’s a pretty interesting feature, and Apple has managed to pull off somewhat of a surprise by turning what was previously an eyesore into a highly practical phone function.

It could be difficult to adjust if you’ve become used to the notch after using an Android phone with just one camera hole, but when it changes dynamically, it seems to make more sense.

After a few days of use, the screen’s holes should have become less obvious, but during our first testing, while watching a few movies, they seemed to be more obvious since the screen wrapped around them rather than the notch, which was at least to one side.

The screen of the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a really stunning new always-on display. Since businesses like Samsung have been offering this functionality for years, don’t call it anything novel.

It may be annoying to have to touch or raise the phone to see the time, which also uses power by waking up the gadget. However, it is something that iPhone customers have been requesting for many years and it looks excellent.

Although our iPhone demonstration was unable to determine by how much, the always-on display would use more power. As a result, it may assist customers who use their phones as a clock to save energy.

With the ability to slow down to only one refresh per second and still show content on the screen, the OLED display technology used in the phone now has the same capabilities as the Apple Watch. This development has made it feasible for this new capability.

Since it has more functionality than we had expected, such as the clock, wallpaper, and widgets that continue to appear even when the phone is locked and off, you’ll need to fiddle with it to decide if you want to see all the widgets or not.

If you’ve never used an iPhone with an OLED screen before, which is possible if you’re coming from one of the previous iPhone 11 models, you’ll be pretty impressed by the clarity and color reproduction, the smoothness, and the overall expanse you receive with this 6.7-inch display.

However, other from the notch, we didn’t detect any other noticeable changes if you’re upgrading from a 12 or 13 Pro Max.

Also supported by the phone is MagSafe wireless charging.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Camera

The focal point of the improved iPhone 14 Pro Max camera is the 48MP sensor. You may use a wider variety of shooting methods, take photographs with higher resolution, or get improved low-light performance with this enhanced technology.

There are several ways that combining more pixels might manifest itself, but one of the most striking ways will likely be (because we can’t really test it now) the ability to compress 48MP into a single 12MP image for high-resolution, low-light photography.

Although we were unable to notice the same thing in the light testing environment, the internal processing appeared clever. According to Apple, its low-light imagery is twice as good.

From our first tests, you could anticipate that the camera is swift and agile. Images concentrate instantly, and the transition between photographs and video occurs very swiftly. There is no reason to believe that this won’t be the case given the upgraded internals, but it’s still important to note.

Apple most likely combined the increased pixels with computational photography from the new A16 CPU to get real clarity in the photos at full resolution and zoomed in.

There is also a new 2x optical zoom that leverages the phone’s 3x sensor to crop in closer than the 1x and 3x zoom lenses, which has a substantial overall effect. The 48MP camera’s 1.9-micron sensor, the largest one Apple has ever used in a phone, will let in a lot of light.

You’ll first notice the larger protrusion of the camera hump on the rear of the new iPhone 14 Pro Max while using it. The pixels get smaller, have a lesser light-gathering capacity, etc. when a higher-MP sensor is placed in the same space as a normal sensor. The new 48MP sensor is enabled in this way, which is presumably why Apple jumped.

In order for the camera to catch all of that gorgeous light, a larger sensor with larger pixels is necessary. It is thought that Sony was the manufacturer of this sensor. Yes, it makes the rear of the phone even thicker, but in our opinion, the improved photographs make up for the increased thickness.

There is also a new Action Mode that, although not as easy to pick as Cinematic Mode, will allow you to watch movies more fluidly while jogging. The 14 Pro Max’s built-in intelligence does appear to make this mode considerably smoother, but it will also need to be tested properly to be seen.

It would be hard to predict how the iPhone 14 Pro Max battery will perform or compare to the iPhone 13 Pro Max battery without subjecting it to our routine battery tests.

It was clear that the 13 Pro performed substantially better than the 12 Pro, and the 14 Pro Max will have an even longer battery life thanks to greater low-power modes assuming the A16 processor lives up to its claims of higher efficiency.

In this instance, the quantity of information shown on the always-on screen may be significant. You may select to have a whole background and widgets that ‘dull’ in and out when you turn on the phone, or you can choose to just display the clock.

The 14 Pro Max is thicker than the 13 Pro Max, which strongly suggests that the larger pack inside is real. This could affect the power pack’s overall longevity and lengthen the time between charges.

Iphone 14 Pro Max Hardware & Software

The speed at which the iPhone 14 Pro Max can function, in addition to the notch changes, is, in our view, the most crucial talking point. It’s clear that this is an upgrade, but Apple definitely wants the Pro models to be the most powerful in the world to justify the increased price.

Although there aren’t many apps that could effectively test this smartphone’s internal capabilities, it’s tough to truly appreciate just how powerful this device is without running benchmarks and, more importantly, actually using it.

Apple made a big deal on stage about the higher power of the iPhone 14 Pro range, and in the hand, it’s tough to imagine that many people would ever slow this phone down, even if (as predicted) it doesn’t quite equal the gain in silicon capability that the iPhone 15 would offer.

The boasts of more powerful RAM seem to be genuine since it is now much simpler to start and stop programs, take images, and do challenging tasks.

Every resource-intensive software we ran, whether it was for rapidly putting together something in GarageBand or capturing 4K 60 fps video, saved and opened quite quickly, which is a very promising sign.

Conclusion

The iPhone 14 Pro Max is the biggest, boldest, and most magnificent phone in Apple’s most recent iPhone series. Also, it is the most expensive.

The new Dynamic Island is a very interesting innovation that we think users will like and quickly adjust to, even if the pill shape does appear to get in the way of certain applications.

The camera enhancements in the iPhone Pro Max range are typical, but it’s possible that the low-light performance and new Action Mode may truly wow us.

It feels quite similar to the phones that came before it in the hand, but Apple supporters didn’t seem to mind in the past. But to retain the iPhone’s current momentum, we still think the iPhone 15 has to be a big improvement.
